Bucket List Goals: the New7Wonders of the World
The morning mist clears and, through the gaps in the swirling clouds, you begin to glimpse pale stone buildings framed by dark peaks – Machu Picchu emerges. It’s 5am and you’ve been hiking for days to get here, walking along Inca pathways and past forgotten settlements. In a few hours the crowds will arrive, but for now you share this breathtaking fifteenth-century city with only a few other intrepid hikers and its modern inhabitants: llamas.
Looking for a backpacking bucket list to beat all others? The New7Wonders of the World spans the entire globe, offering an ambitious explorer seven unbeatable heritage sites just waiting to be discovered.
The New7 Wonders: Origins
The New7Wonders project is the brain child of the truly inspiring Bernard Weber. The campaign was born from a desire to connect humanity through one simple concept: he wanted to create a democratically-selected, modern day seven wonders of the world.
Working with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Weber drew up a list of every potential site across the globe before encouraging millions of the public to get involved and vote. On the 7th day of the 7th month in 2007, the Official New 7 Wonders of the World were declared.
The New7Wonders’ core values, such as communication across political and ethical divides and sharing experiences with the global community, will appeal to all backpackers who see themselves as citizens of the world. Using this list as inspiration for your globetrotting ventures is a fantastic way to meet like-minded travellers with a passion for people, travel and culture.
Mystical Civilisations
Marvel at the Mayans, be inspired by the Incas and find peace at Petra – the New7Wonders includes three stunning rediscovered cities built by fascinating lost civilisations.
Wandering between beautifully constructed temples in Mexico at Chichén Itzá and beneath towering buildings carved into solid sandstone in Jordan’s Petra, you’ll get a sense of the rise and fall of civilisations throughout time. However, the care spent on delicate carvings reveals a love of beauty that unites all humans from every age.
Iconic Monuments
This list is not messing around; the other four New7Wonders are Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, the Colosseum in Rome, the Taj Mahal in India and the Great Wall of China.
These monuments are truly iconic, imprinted into a global sense of culture and identity. Whether it’s watching the sunset play across the Taj Mahal’s marble walls or clambering up steep steps to see unparalleled views across China, these locations are astounding. For a round-the-world traveller who wants to see the most amazing places here on earth, there is no better starting point!
