Ethan’s Pick: Six of the Coolest Cruises Out There
When I think of cruises, my first association is that of climbing up the walls on a slow ocean liner, with nothing to entertain me but a crowded swimming pool and a cold, soulless gym. But boy, was I biased! Inspired by a friend who set off on a trip to Antarctica, I started looking at what else is out there that could spark my wanderlust. A cruise through Canada’s Inside Passage? Norway’s fjords? The South Pacific Islands? The waterways of the Amazon? Yes, please.
How does a cruise around Antarctica taking in icebergs, sharks and penguins sound? If this is more up your street then read on…
Antarctica
If that video doesn’t inspire wanderlust then I don’t know what will! Antarctic cruises set off from Southern Argentina, encompassing the Falkland Islands and Great Britain’s South Georgia Islands, offering unforgettable stops in Antarctica.
Canada’s Inside Passage
The cruises on offer up the west Canadian and Alaskan coasts are not exactly rare, but there are some smaller scale options which can more easily reach the remote inlets and fjords that will make for the trip of a lifetime. These intricate Inside Passage waterways will offer a sense of adventure and discovery that no large ship could in a million years. Up in British Columbia you can also board a Tugboat, where you can spot whales, bears and eagles, and possibly even hear the hair-raising howls of wolf packs!
Norway
Can you see yourself floating along a crystal-clear blue waterway that’s carved its way through a pristine snowy mountain range? Then the fjords are for you in all their breath-taking, sparkling glory! With spectacular views the whole year round, you can see Norway and its charmingly historic coastal cities including Trondheim, Ålesund and Tromsø the Viking way: from the water! Cruise through the Arctic Circle on top of the world and enjoy trips that feature whale watching and Northern Lights spotting in the winter months.
Pacific
For a more exciting cruise in warmer climates than the ones I’ve already suggested, one through the super picturesque South Pacific Islands may be just the ticket. There will be art and history galore on this cruise from Fiji to Baliu, with key stops at important historical WW11 sites, tropical snorkelling excursions in divine turquoise seas and the chance to dock at lesser-known ports like Lombok in Indonesia, where you can visit the Fountain of Youth, among other sacred and royal sites.
The Amazon
For a river cruise, nothing beats the Amazon in terms of excitement! Spy pink river dolphins, sloths, howler monkeys, toucans and macaws among plenty of other fauna, all in their natural habitat. The exotic wildlife is reason enough for embarking on this South American water adventure, with cruiseliners also offering nature trips and cultural excursions into local villages.
