How to Finance your Epic RTW Trip Whilst Travelling

Author: Ethan Bailey

Are you itching to go on a round the world trip, but are worried about how to make ends meet? Sure, you can scrimp and save on the road by staying in dorms and eating street food, but some things you just can’t afford to ‘save’ on – especially specialist backpacker travel insurance and any immunisations or medication you may require for where you’re heading. Worry not! I have been in the same position, so I’ve put together a list of ways to make money while travelling the world. Not only will it keep you in cash, but you’ll see countries and their people in a new light, improve language skills and gain a new perspective.

Fabulous Freelancing

If you have experience doing anything requiring computer skills, then all you need is your laptop and internet connection to fund your travels from the road. Sites such as UpWork, Task Rabbit and Fiverr are great for finding work. Building up your portfolio can be time-consuming and competition is quite fierce, but using this method to pay for your trip means the world is your office!

Humble Hostel Work

You’d be surprised how many hostels are constantly on the look-out for staff volunteers. In exchange for working at reception checking people in and out and helping them plan their stays, you can expect a free stay, free breakfast and even drinks and food discounts.

This is a great way to meet fellow backpackers, and hostels are often really sociable and fun places to hang out. While you won’t be making money, you’ll be spending almost nothing so it is a great help.

Become a Bartender

Lots of places in backpacker hotspots like hiring travellers for their English skills, and you can make a bit of cash pouring beers, collecting glasses or even handing out fliers. You don’t have to make a big time commitment either as a lot of these places have a really high staff turnover anyway.

Try Out Teaching English

For those lucky enough to have English as their first language, teaching English is a sure-fire way to make decent money while on your travels. Easy to find, well paid and with flexible hours, this is a great way to make money and immerse yourself in one place and culture for a while. Some language schools will even throw in great bonuses and round trip flights! Don’t be daunted by the idea of standing in front of a class either, there’s a wealth of online resources to help with lesson planning, and if I can do this then anyone can!

I really can’t stress enough how important getting backpacker travel insurance is – you need to be covered for any eventuality when working and travelling around the world. Let’s Go Insure’s backpacker travel insurance will let you make the most of your epic RTW trip as we help you to go that little bit further, deeper and higher on your travels— as a backpacker, travel insurance just became one less thing to worry about !
